Abstract

This paper explores the origin and the meaning of amor mundi, or love of the world, of Hannah Arendt(1906-1975) who rejected the idea of the philosophically ‘ultimate aim’ and yet accepted the idea as the only ground of her thinking. The concept of ‘amor mundi’ was first suggested in her doctoral dissertation titled Love and St. Augustine which she submitted to University of Heidelberg in 1928 to redefine love in relation to practical and realistic life. Arendt argues that the ‘love’ for Christ emphasized by Augustine is toward God, the absolute and transcendental being, and is, thus, set for an eternal world of the future. However, to her, ‘love’ is not a sole value or an absolute notion, but the act of forming relations with a myriad of beings in the world and with their lives. If we insist on eternity of the future only, thereby failing to fully desire the present and give proper attention to neighboring beings, the world we live in would not last long. In that sense, Arendt claims that we should practice ‘amor mundi’ first by remembering the fact that we were born in the same world(natality) and feeling grateful for it. This paper investigates practical implications of Arendt’s amor mundi for various areas of education that are required in our time, such as ㅡeducation focused only on the future and education that rejects multi-cultural and pluralistic life, especially in terms of ‘natality’ and ‘relevance,’ or the essence of education, according to her.
