Abstract

This article examines the similar forms in foreshore boats, rafts (ttebae), fishing lines, haenye(Woman divers) tools, which have been used up till now between Korea-Japan fishing tools andfind the similarities, differences, and interactions. Foreshore boats were used as a catching tool as well as the means of transportation whencatching fishes and shellfishes. Its shapes and uses are the same, however, Korea use theEarthenware Jar for keeping the catches while Japan use a wooden bucket to keep their catches. Also, the Japanese wooden bucket was used as a transportation tool which has slippery surfaceat the bottom unlike Korea and it can put harvested products right from the foreshore. If the use of the Korean foreshore boat was to gather and transport shellfish, such as cockleor razor clam, Japan used the boat for catching fish, such as green eel, hoppfish, and unagi, which shows great differences. Rafts (ttebae) are used in both Korea and Japan for harvestingseaweed because it makes much easier to get near reefs with a raft than a barge. Rafts are distributed within seaweed production area and therefore it is no longer in usein western coast areas where seaweed is not produced. One of the necessities to harvestingseaweed is goggles. In the past, more than a couple of people have teamed up for harvestingseaweed, now it is the case for both countries where an individual catches seaweed on their ownwith rafts. A fishing line with multiple hooks is mainly used for catching a fish at the bottom of theocean and in the middle. Skate ray, goosefish, flat fish, and eels are included in the former, alaska pollack, yellow croaker, sawedged perch are included in the latter. Korean fishing lines tend to develop ahead in comparison with Japan’s, however, ‘Gul nak’was influenced by Japan for not using the bait and therefore a technique for skate ray can be similar to that of influence. The form and use of the woman diver tools are all same in both Korea and Japan. Becauseeven with rubber wet suits, flippers, goggles, and soft iron waistbands were all under theinfluence of Japan. However, panties (sojungyi) were passed down from woman divers of JejuIsland to woman divers of Japan where divers worked naked. Equipments and costumes weremutually influenced because Jeju woman divers went out at sea.
