Abstract
Bamboo containers are made of branches of bamboo and bush clover containers made oftwigs of bush clover have been handed down from the same time in the Korean peninsula andits surrounding insular area. The people living in the southern part of Korea were accustomedto bamboo containers while the people of the northern part used bush clover containers. Bamboo plants which are used for making bamboo containers are widespread, fromsubtropical and tropical regions to temperate regions. They made bamboo containers asbamboo grows well in the southern part of the Korean peninsula and its surrounding insulararea. The people of the north made a variety of bush clover containers using bush clover twigsas bamboo was uncommon there. It seems likely that the bamboo culture which was transmitted through the Korean peninsulaand its surrounding insular area came along with the bamboo plant from a faraway southerncountry. Indonesians call bamboo containers ‘bagi’. Okinawans call them ‘baahki’ or ‘sohki’. ‘Baahki’ in Okinawa is a tool for transportation and ‘sohki’ is a kitchen utensil. The southern people in the Korean peninsula and its surrounding insular area call bamboocontainers baskets (baguni and sokuri). For comparison the people of the west starting fromSeomjin river used bamboo containers called ‘baguni’ while those of the east used ones called‘sokuri’. There is a high probability that ‘bagi’ in Indonesian, ‘baahki’ in Okinawan and ‘baguni’ inthe southwest region in the Korean peninsula are derived from the same word. Also, ‘sohki’ inOkinawa and ‘sokuri’ in the southeast region in the Korean peninsula have a high possibility oforiginated from the same word. In the Jeju region where the culture of the bamboo container belongs to, it is called ‘gudeok’or ‘charong’ not ‘baguni’ or ‘sokuri’, ‘gudeok’ is a bamboo container made square for women inJeju to conveniently carry on their back and ‘charong’ is an upper-and-lower paired bamboocontainer. This paper aims to look into the actual conditions of transmission of ‘gudeok’ and‘charong’ from the past to the present in Jeju.
