Abstract

This paper takes an in-depth study on field-contextual research for traditional fishingmethods and fishery heritage in Daewhanggang river basins which compose Seomjin river withits downstreams. In the past, the representative fishes from Seomjin river basins were sweetfish, mitten crabs, eels, mandarin fish and marsh snails. A wide range of traditional fishing methodswere applied to catch these fishery resources and most of the fishery methods was Kawa,Gaejul, Gaebal, crab fishing, Sugae, Dokkeundaegi, Jik, fishpound fishing, a shing spear, a fishingnet and rod fishing. The fishpound fishing which makes Seomjin river fishery up is classified into two differenttypes according to its size; a large sized fishpound which has a fixed installation with wovenblinds out of bamboo by blocking the water way and a small sized fishpound which is placedtemporarily on the pathway for fish migrations by using Sugae which plays as traps. The mostcommon fixed fishpound is Doksal which blocks the flow of tide when fishermen catch fishand this type of Doksal is deeply related in securing certain amount of sweetfish which wasone of the offering items to the king during the Joseon Dynasty. On the other hand, temporaryfishpound installed only during the rich fishery season has an inseparable relation to the catchof mitten crabs which are having spawning migration in the fall. The fishpound in Seomjin river is located at a place where the neck of the rapids and marshesmeet. The fishpound has a V-shaped or diagonal lined structure according to the flow ofwater. These shapes make it possible to cope with flood by dispersing water pressure from theupper course of a river and to minimize loss of fishpound banks with scientific principle for astone embankment. This is a heritage for fishery technology which utilizes the water flow andgeographical features of the river and it is designed to catch fish heading to downstream andupper steam on both sides. An individual operation is a normal type of fishpound management but there also were some cases with a union type of management and a traditional privatefund type management for cooperated fishery and distribution in community. The principle of fishpound today is applied to fishery using crab net weir or other netfishing in downstreams of Seomjin river. Traditional fishpound with stone fishing weir is hardlyseen anywhere but the principle of fishpound is still continued to be applied for fishery. Thistraditional fishing method is valuable fishery heritage with wisdom of people who adaptedthemselves to the ecology environment in Seomjin river.
