Abstract
This article undertakes a meticulous examination of the reconstruction of the Thái Miếu (Imperial Ancestral Temple) of the Vietnamese Lý dynasty, conducted around 1604, with a primary focus on the epigraphic source Inscription on the Reconstruction of the Cổ Pháp điện (Cổ Pháp điện tạo bi, 1604), authored by Phùng Khắc Khoan. As the only extant primary source documenting this restoration, the inscription is analyzed through a full decipherment of its 1,390 characters and structured into five thematic sections. This analysis reconstructs the complex interplay of ritual logic, political context, and historical consciousness embedded in the act of restoration. Particularly significant are several revealing features of the inscription: the renaming of the ancestral temple from Thái Miếu to Cổ Pháp điện; the inconsistent application of name taboos (bì huì) in the depiction of Lý emperors; the prominent mention of Trịnh Tùng, the de facto ruler and initiator of the restoration; and the use of a four-clawed dragon motif—typically signifying nobility rather than imperial sovereignty—on the monument. These elements suggest that the restoration process extended beyond Confucian reverence for dynastic ancestors and was deeply entangled with the political strategies and historical reinterpretations of the Later Lê (Hậu Lê) dynasty. The inscription simultaneously affirms reverence for the Lý dynasty while subtly subordinating its legacy within a new framework of dynastic legitimacy. In this light, the monument not only records a physical reconstruction of an ancestral space but also reveals the ideological positioning of the Later Lê court—its negotiation between historical veneration and political appropriation. As such, this inscription serves as a crucial artifact for understanding the intellectual and symbolic strategies through which early modern Vietnamese regimes constructed historical continuity and asserted political authority.
