Abstract
From his external career alone, Dan'gye(端磎) Kim In-seop(金麟燮) can be seen as a quintessential figure of the Joseon-era sadaebu (士大夫, scholar-official class). In the countryside (hyangchon, 鄕村), he maintained his status as a Confucian scholar by cultivating his literary and scholarly abilities through reading. When he entered government service, he fulfilled his practical ambitions as a bureaucrat. However, unlike previous times, the era in which he lived was marked by the collapse of the Joseon dynasty, during which government positions were monopolized by a few central aristocratic families. As a native of Gyeongsangnam-do who had been largely marginalized from government service following the Injo Restoration(仁祖反正), Kim faced a reality in which, despite passing the state examination(gwageo, 科擧) and formally beginning his career, he had little opportunity to hold actual office. Apart from a brief period spent in Seoul for official duties after passing the examination, he was compelled to spend most of his life in the countryside. There, he concentrated on agricultural management—a crucial economic foundation for preserving his status as a Confucian scholar—and actively engaged in scholarly and literary pursuits, which made full use of his capabilities as a man of letters and learning. His diary, Dan'gyeIlgi(端溪日記), contains abundant records of these diverse activities in the countryside. By extracting materials related to Yi Jung's prose writing activities, this study traced the process by which a Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period came to adopt prose writing as a basis for his livelihood. As a result, it was found that although Kim In-seop's prose writing activities may not be considered a profession in the modern sense, they did serve as an important means of livelihood for him at the time.
