Abstract

This paper examines the survival strategies and operational practices of Jikjisa(直指寺), a millennium-old Buddhist temple located in Gimsan(金山), during the Joseon Dynasty. Focusing on its response to imposed Buddhist Monk Labor(僧役), tax obligations, and interactions with the local Confucian literati(士林), the study highlights how Jikjisa maintained its presence amid the state's anti-Buddhist policies and the dominance of Confucian ideology. The Joseon government, under the principle of “suppressing Buddhism while promoting Confucianism”(崇儒抑佛), implemented institutional restrictions that led many temples to decline or disappear. In contrast, Jikjisa ensured its survival by securing royal patronage and fulfilling public functions that were compatible with state and elite interests. It was designated as the guardian temple(守護寺刹) of King Jeongjong’s Taesil(胎室, placenta chamber) in the early Joseon period and later served as a royal Buddhist shrine(願堂) for Kings Sukjong and Yeongjo. These symbolic roles enabled the temple to secure royal protection and negotiate the reduction of its fiscal and labor obligations. Furthermore, Jikjisa reinforced its role within the Confucian framework by continuing the Goryeo tradition of Buddhist text publication, notably contributing to the Joseon-era printing of the Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu(資治通鑑綱目). Its function as a cultural venue for scholarly gatherings also allowed the temple to build strong ties with regional yangban families, thereby legitimizing its continued presence and institutional longevity.
