Abstract

This paper is the first in a series of studies that aim to demonstrate the significant transformation of the royal investiture system, taking the period of Mongol subjugation as a critical turning point. It investigates the structure of the royal investiture system in early Koryŏ, prior to Mongol domination, and seeks to elucidate its historical characteristics through a comparative analysis with the Lý dynasty of Vietnam. Previous scholarship has generally drawn a distinction between two phases: one in which royal authority was conferred through investiture during the Mongol period, and a phase outside the period of Mongol subjugation in which rulers had already ascended the throne prior to receiving investiture. This approach has tended to classify periods based on the substantive or formal nature of investiture. In contrast, this study expands beyond the single event of investiture itself and reexamines the broader structural network in which investiture was embedded, thereby uncovering previously overlooked but significant moments of change. Through this perspective, the study seeks to provide a more nuanced and multidimensional understanding of how the investiture system functioned in each period. This study analyzes how the system operated at the intersection of two dimensions: the theoretical principles underlying investiture and the internal political order in which the monarch exercised power and was de facto recognized as sovereign both domestically and internationally. In particular, it closely examines the procedural steps and time intervals between the death of a predecessor and the investiture of the new king, revealing that early Koryŏ displayed a distinctive pattern: swift enthronement followed by markedly delayed investiture—a pattern that diverged significantly from the post-subjugation era. Furthermore, a comparison with the Lý dynasty of Vietnam reveals that similar structural characteristics were present in another East Asian polity during the same period. This comparative perspective contributes to a broader inquiry into how royal investiture systems functioned within the international order of East Asia in the pre-Mongol era.
