Abstract
This study examined the psychological factors experienced by children who are victims of crimes, such as abuse, during the process of making statements and testifying. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 children aged 5 to 14 who visited the Sunflower Center in Seoul to provide statements, and the data were analyzed using the general qualitative method suggested by Kutner, Olson, Warner, and Hertzog (2008). The analysis revealed three dimensions and 13 common themes regarding the experiences of child victims: ‘the investigator as perceived by the child’, ‘the interrogation room environment’, and ‘the child’s psychological experience of the statement process’. Investigators were generally seen as kind, warm, and professional but occasionally asked challenging questions that did not consider the child’s perspective. Although the environment was designed to make children comfortable, elements like filming equipment and multiple individuals caused tension and discomfort. Children reported emotional relief from discussing their victimization but also experienced fatigue from prolonged investigations, discomfort in repeatedly recounting the incident, and psychological burden regarding their statements’ consequences. The findings suggest the need for age-appropriate questioning, child-friendly spaces, and strategies to minimize statement durations to better support child victims.
