Abstract
This study explored the role entering and performance experiences of novice group counseling supervisors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 novice group counseling supervisors, and the data were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method. The analysis yielded four domains, eleven categories, and thirty subcategories that describe the participants’ experiences. The four domains were: (1) Conflicts and Acceptance of Entering the Group Counseling Supervisor Role, (2) Difficulties in the Process of Conducting Group Counseling Supervision, (3) Impacts of Group Counseling Supervision and Emerging Challenges, and (4) Identity Moratorium and Necessary Elements for Becoming a Group Counseling Supervisor. The categories identified by domain are as follows. First, in the domain of Conflicts and Acceptance of Entering the Group Counseling Supervisor Role, the categories were: “Opportunities to Enter the Supervisor Role,” “Hesitation due to Doubts About Professional Growth,” and “Acceptance of the Group Counseling Supervisor Role.” Second, the domain of Difficulties in the Process of Conducting Group Counseling Supervision included the following categories: “Confusion in Using Reports and Processing Information for Supervision Preparation,” “Difficulty Implementing Content and Structure Appropriate for Group Counseling Supervision,” “Influence of Personal Needs and Motives Beyond Supervisory Goals,” and “Experiences of Ethical Confusion in the Supervisory Relationship.” Third, the domain of Impacts of Group Counseling Supervision and Emerging Challenges consisted of: “Coping with Inadequacies and Difficulties as a Source of Growth,” and “Perceiving Insufficient Rewards and Resources for Professional Development.” Lastly, the domain of Identity Moratorium and Necessary Elements for Becoming a Group Counseling Supervisor included: “Role Acceptance Without Firm Identity,” and “Competencies and Resources Needed for Professional Role Performance.” Based on these findings, education and support plans for novice group counseling supervisors and limitations of the study were discussed.
