Abstract
In the paradoxical environment of a hyper-connected society, individual loneliness has emerged as a significant challenge that threatening physical and psychological health across the lifespan and expanding into a societal issue. This study conducted a keyword network analysis of 837 papers on loneliness published in KCI-indexed journals from 1966 to April 2025, aiming to identify trends in domestic research and derive implications for future studies in the field of counseling. The analysis revealed that academic interest in loneliness was limited in the early years but began to increase in the mid-2010s, with more than 30 papers published annually, and the number of papers has increased rapidly since 2020. Among the keywords related to loneliness, ‘society’ had the highest frequency, followed by ‘elderly’, ‘depression’, ‘relationships’, ‘adolescents’, ‘addiction’, ‘health’, and ‘suicide’. A network analysis of 64 keywords with a frequency of 15 or more indicated a single structure characterized by high connectivity and short distances between nodes. While centrality was concentrated in certain keywords, the overall distribution was relatively balanced. The centrality analysis revealed that ‘society’, ‘depression’, and ‘relationships’ held key positions, while age-related(elderly, adolescents), risk-related(stress, addiction, smartphone), and support-related keywords also played central roles. CONCOR analysis categorized the research into four clusters: social isolation and emotional well-being, socio-cultural transition and adaptation, interpersonal functioning and emotional development, and digital environments and psychological vulnerability. By illuminating the knowledge structure and core themes of loneliness research in Korea through keyword network analysis, this study is significant in that it presents foundational data and a directional framework for subsequent research in the field of counseling.
