Abstract

This paper examines the characteristics of the 「King Aejang's Royal Edict(哀莊王 敎書;806)」, the first Sumptuary law in Silla, and tries to explain the background of its promulgation from an East Asian perspective. The 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」 was understood as a material symbolizing the Silla state authority’s will to control Buddhism in that much of its content was related to Buddhism. However, in comparison with other prohibitions, it is difficult to say that the subject of 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」 is limited to the Buddhist community. Instead, the 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」 was promulgated to the society as a whole and is believed to have specifically targeted the Jingol class in general. Academia sometimes emphasizes the possibility that Silla's first sumptuary law existed before the 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」. Particularly, it attaches great significance to the phrase “follow the old law[敢率舊章]” mentioned in the 「King Heungdeok's Royal Edict(興德王 敎書)」. However, it is highly likely that the expression was used as a cliché. Therefore, it is reasonable to consider that the first Sumptuary law in Silla was the 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」. In fact, the delay in enacting the sumptuary law in Silla society was not due to the institutional incompleteness. Rather, this issue was related to the universality of luxury issues. The promulgation of the sumptuary law required the prior emergence of a ‘consumption culture’, particularly the circulation and prevalence of imported luxury goods. The prevalence of luxury in ancient East Asia was closely linked to the decline of the Chinese empire. The restrictions on the use of silk and gold and silverware(金銀器) in the 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」 originated from the An-Shi Rebellion(安史之亂) in the mid-8th century. As luxury goods began to flow out amid the chaos of the Tang Empire, the luxury goods which had been previously controlled and monopolized by the Silla royal family spread into the lower part of the society including the Jingol(眞骨) class in general. When the upper class can no longer outpace the lower class's ‘imitation,’ the countermeasure available to the upper class is to enact legal regulations. The birth of 「King Aejang's Royal Edict」 as the origin of Silla's Sumptuary law should be understood in that context.
