Abstract

In the late Joseon period, King Jeongjo completed a historical critique collection (22 volumes, 80 books) in 1775, before he ascended the throne. As he read through a total of 23 historical texts, from Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian to the History of the Ming Dynasty, he compiled critiques by historians of each era. This collection includes critiques on historical figures found in the “Annals” and “Biographies” sections of historical records written in a chronological-biographical style, as well as excerpts from the introductory sections of the “Treatises”, which help understand changes in institutions such as astronomy, geography, politics, economy, society, and culture. In particular, in the preface of this book, he presented four principles or elements for understanding history: the factors of advancement and decline, the distinction between right and wrong, good and evil, the choices between principles and expediency, and the discernment of name and reality. King Jeongjo read the vast amounts of history following these principles of understanding history, and furthermore, he was able to grasp the fundamental principles of historical critique and historiography. This book is a valuable literary heritage that provides insight into King Jeongjo's understanding of history and his methods, but it has not yet received much attention from academia. This paper is an attempt to explore King Jeong jo's methods of reading and understanding history through an analysis of his historical critique collection, “The Scales and Evaluations of All History.”
