Abstract

This study investigates the factors influencing self-regulation practices in nonprofit organizations, drawing on resource dependence theory and institutional theory. Using data from a 2023 survey of 141 nonprofit organizations registered as public interest corporations in South Korea, the study measures self-regulation across 34 items spanning seven domains, including ethical charters, financial guidelines, governance rules, stakeholder communication, and third-party accreditation. Negative binomial regression analysis reveals that higher dependence on donations, greater perceived intensity of government regulation, and stronger organizational agency are significantly associated with higher levels of self-regulation. The findings suggest that self-regulation is not merely a passive response to external pressures but a strategic mechanism adopted by resource-dependent and institutionally engaged organizations. This study contributes to the understanding of how regulatory environments and internal capacities interact to shape nonprofit accountability practices, and it provides theoretical and policy implications for designing more effective co-regulatory frameworks.
