Abstract

This study examines the characteristics and limitations of Korean ink painting criticism in the 1970s through the analysis of the Mun Myung-dae and Suh Se-ok debate of 1974. While superficially known as an incident where Seoul National University alumni collectively protested art historian Mun Myung-dae’s criticism of artist Suh Se-ok’s work, the controversy revealed complex underlying issues including the tension between tradition and modernity, redefinition of Korean identity, and power dynamics within the art world. The research findings reveal two major problems in 1970s Korean ink painting criticism. First, the schematic use of concepts such as ‘nation,’ ‘tradition,’ and ‘modernity.’ Combined with the Park Chung-hee regime’s ‘national revival’ ideology, criticism was trapped in dichotomous frameworks of ‘national vs. foreign’ and ‘traditional vs. modern,’ prioritizing ideological legitimacy over aesthetic value. Second, authoritarian tendencies manifested within the socio-political context. The oppressive atmosphere of 1974, marked by emergency measures and political repression, made criticism of authority figures practically taboo in Korean ink painting, a field with strong master-disciple educational traditions. The debate revealed key contentious issues: the gap between criticism’s legitimacy and artists’ receptiveness, the imbalanced structure of collective response to individual criticism, and the determination to define “Korean-ness” in art. It demonstrated nationalism’s contradictory characteristics in post-colonial identity construction—becoming overly conscious of Japan while attempting to overcome Japanese influence. This study reexamines the debate not as mere personal conflict but as a historical turning point in Korean art criticism, emphasizing that criticism is a creative act reconstructing art’s meaning within socio-historical contexts. By exploring the roots of contemporary Korean art criticism issues, it seeks to provide opportunities for reflection toward forming more mature, open, and pluralistic critical discourse by overcoming dichotomous thinking.
