Abstract

The “#Sexual Violence_in_Art World” movement emerged among actors identified as artists and activists against the backdrop of both fourth-wave feminism and their activities as “Hellfeminists.” Initiated by Soma Kim’s post on ‘Evernote’, this movement sought to address the issue of sexual violence in the art world through individuals’ social media activities, employing ‘Hashtags’ and other platform features during a period when no relevant actors or institutions existed to resolve it; it subsequently expanded into art realm and internationally in various forms. It was a political response by women artists to sexual violence rooted in power dynamics perpetrated by individuals who leveraged their social positions in the art world embedded in relational and institutional networks. In this study, I propose “Politics of Place” as a political practice through which arts practitioners claim and reclaim their right to membership in the art world and their bodily sovereignty. Place refers to the smallest unit of the site including the body, and the “Politics of Place” involves visualizing presence—making visible the declaration: “I am here.” As specific case studies, I examined the practices of diverse actors such as the ‘Association of Women Artists (AWA)’, ‘Silentmegaphone’, ‘No New Work’, and ‘Louise the Woman'. I also suggest that the “#Sexual Violence_in_Art World” movement is a complex formation that resists simple categorization as either a political art movement or a cultural phenomenon within a binary framework, emerging from the recognition that “there is no safe place here either.” This study highlights ‘Louise the Woman’ for its feminist artistic practice, which established a networked space serving simultaneously as a platform to expose and counteract the male cartel facilitating sexual violence in the art world, and as a refuge for safety. Building on this, the Politics of Place in Louise the Woman’s practice is examined from two perspectives.
