Abstract
The Geopolitics, developed since the 19th century, came to be utilized as a strategic tool by hegemonic powers in the early 20th century. At the time, Britain represented maritime hegemony, known as ‘Sea power’. However, facing challenges from new hegemonic powers like Russia and Germany, Britain was forced to consider ways to maintain its ‘Sea power’. Mackinder, who introduced geopolitics to hegemonic strategy, developed the theory of ‘Land power’. He observed Russia’s emerging hegemonic strategy and incorporated the idea that Britain’s ‘Sea power’ could be sustained by preventing Russia’s maritime expansion. He highlighted the importance of Eastern Europe in establishing a geopolitical defensive line, marking the first recognition of Eastern Europe’s geopolitical value and role. Geopolitically, Eastern Europe lies in the ‘Rimland’ between ‘Sea power’ and ‘Land power’. In the early 20th century, the Balkan Peninsula, including Bosnia, was a battleground between the old ‘Land power’, Austria, and the new ‘Land power’, Russia, and served as the final gateway to the sea. With Russia’s ‘Southward Expansion’ into the Balkans thwarted by British intervention and the ‘1905 Russian Revolution’, Austria was able to fully launch its ‘Eastward Expansion policy’. Through this expansion, Austria hoped to extend its empire and pursue its ambitions for ‘Sea power’. Bosnia served as a geopolitical bridgehead in this endeavor in the early 20th century.
