Abstract
The Eastern Europe has long been called the ‘Gateway to Europe’, and has experienced numerous geopolitical conflicts as a result. In the early 20th century, Western European empires maintained their imperial hegemony while simultaneously guarding against the emergence of other hegemony. This led to the development of geopolitics as an academic discipline to study this issue. Geopolitical theory began with Mahan’s ‘Sea Power’ and Mackinder’s ‘Land Power’, and evolved into Spykman’s ‘Rimland’ and Haushofer’s ‘Lebensraum’. These geopolitical theories have significantly influenced the formulation of United States hegemonic strategies since the 20th century, and have exerted a significant influence on international politics through the work of Kennan, Kissinger, and Brzezinski. Geopolitically, Eastern Europe and the Korean Peninsula occupy the ‘Rimland’ between ‘Sea Power’ and ‘Land Power’. ‘Sea Power’ seeks to prevent the rise of ‘Land Power’ and its maritime expansion to maintain its existing hegemony. To achieve this, leveraging the geopolitical value of ‘Rimland’ countries is crucial. While Britain faithfully served as a ‘Sea Power’ before World War II, the United States does the same today. Meanwhile, ‘Land Powers’, represented by Russia and China, had to overcome ‘Sea Power’ blockades and expand their maritime reach to challenge global hegemony. This was evident in Russia’s acquisition of Ice-free ports(floating ports) and its Southward expansion policy since the 18th century, and China’s efforts to expand its maritime reach through Taiwan and the South China Sea today. This study analyzes the geopolitical value and role of Eastern Europe within diverse geopolitics, focusing on Eastern Europe, a gateway to Europe and a key example in geopolitical theory.
