Abstract
This paper explores the dialectical tension between self- construction and self-dissolution within mindfulness meditation, a practice rooted in Buddhist traditions yet widely adapted into contemporary psychological frameworks. While traditional Buddhism emphasizes insight into non-self (anātman) and the deconstruction of ego-based identification, modern psychology often utilizes mindfulness to build emotional regulation and a coherent sense of self. Rather than treating these approaches as contradictory, I argue that mindfulness operates as a dual mechanism: fostering a functional observer-self while also loosening identification with it. This dual process is examined through key mechanisms such as meta-awareness, perspective-taking, memory reconsolidation, non- attachment, and decentering. These processes allow for both psychological flexibility and ontological transformation. Situating our analysis within the broader context of Buddhist modernism, we examine how mindfulness integrates traditional con templative aims with secular therapeutic applications. By high lighting the interplay of opposing tendencies—stabilizing and dissolving the self—we present mindfulness not as a linear path but as a dynamic space where transformation arises from em bracing internal tension. This integrated framework offers new insight into how mindfulness facilitates both healing and wisdom, bridging cognitive-emotional regulation with deeper existential awareness.
