Abstract
The Joseon dynasty commentaries on Jinul’s Beopjipbyeolhaengnok- Jeoryo-Byeongip-Sagi greatly enhance our understanding of the text. Among them, Beopjipbyeolhaengnok-Jeoryo-Byeongip-Sagi-Bun’gwa by Sangbong Jeongwon classifies Jinul’s system of practice into three aspects; Perfect Awakening(圓悟), Perfect Cultivation(圓修), and Perfect Realization(圓證). This triadic structure is presented as central to Jinul’s intent and is consistently articulated throughout the text. It reflects Jinul’s in-depth and systematic reinterpretation of Zongmi’s concept of ‘sudden awakening followed by gradual cultivation(頓悟漸修)’, which he further develops into the paradigm of ‘enlightenment-driven practice(先悟後修)’. This paper reexamines Jinul’s theory of enlightenment-driven practice on the basis of Sangbong Jeongwon’s classification of the practice system into Perfect Awakening, Perfect Cultivation, and Perfect Realization. Perfect Awakening refers to realizing that one’s mind, serene and luminously aware(空寂靈知), is originally identical with the Buddha’s mind. However, this initial awakening does not fully eliminate the habitual tendencies of ignorance, necessitating further cultivation. Perfect Cultivation involves relying on awakening to refine one’s mind through two methods: non-conceptual practice(無念修) and task-oriented or situational practice(辦事修). This process emphasizes trusting and observing the mind so as to return to its original nature. Perfect Realization is the state of complete unification with the original mind, achieved through practice grounded in awakening. Jinul reinterprets this as the paradigm of ‘enlightenment-driven practice’. He also introduces an alternative approach via Musim- hapdo(無心合道) of Patriarchal Chan(祖師禪), emphasizing immediate unification with the original mind, thus allowing direct access to Perfect Realization at any moment and in any circumstance.
