Abstract

Recently, mindfulness meditation has been developed as a standardized program and is being used in various clinical areas. Numerous empirical studies have examined the effectiveness and mechanism of mindfulness meditation. However, empirical studies on mindfulness meditation mainly focus on short-term therapeutic effects such as stress reduction and emotion regulation. Research on mindfulness meditation for insight and wisdom is relatively scarce. The purpose of this study is, first, to propose a hypothetical model for the relationship between mindfulness meditation, insight, and wisdom from a psychological point of view. The second purpose is to present empirical evidence for the hypothetical model based on previous studies. Mindfulness meditation is a series ofinsightsin that it adopts a new perspective different from the existing egoism as a decentering of inner experience. This mindfulness meditation induces objective introspection through nonjudgmental awareness of experiences. Wisdom, as a result of objective introspection, is a mature personality that understands the essence of life and adapts and copes with it effectively. In this study, empirical studies supporting this hypothetical model were introduced. It is hoped that this study will promote follow-up research on mindfulness meditation, insight, and wisdom.
