Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to critically examine Emmanuel Levinas’s concept of absolute otherness by focusing on Paul Ricoeur’s notion of the capable human being. In Levinas’s thought, absolute otherness serves as the central concept for overcoming the violence and limitations inherent in the modern subject's philosophy of the same. However, it leads to the radical negation of the subject's capacities, thereby resulting in an ambiguous foundation for the agent. In contrast, Ricoeur's philosophy, which centered on the notion of capability, offers a model of reciprocity that acknowledges the subject's capacities while thoroughly reflecting on otherness. Ricoeur’s capable human being is understood as a being that acts, interprets, and takes responsibility in the world. Furthermore, Ricoeur’s framework reveals the reciprocal structure of selfhood and otherness through four fundamental capability: to speak, to act, to narrate, to take responsibility. In conclusion, Ricoeur’s concept of the capable human being opens up a new possibility for hermeneutical self-understanding that moves beyond absolute otherness and instead reconstructs selfhood through otherness.
