Abstract

Ricoeur’s hermeneutics and ethics were presented through a reflection on human fragility. Ricoeur’s interest in human fragility stemmed from taking into account the faults or evils that bring out suffering in our lives. Ricoeur’s early work, Fallible Man, is the core text of his philosophical anthropology. This article examines Ricoeur’s philosophical anthropology focusing on human fragility and disproportion. In particular, this paper tries to include with how Ricoeur treats the terms in the context of philosophical anthropology, with his hermeneutics and ethics in mind. First, before a discussion of human disproportion and fragility, I will briefly summarize the characteristics of Ricoeur’s philosophical anthropology(2). And I try to present that he emphasized the concept of disproportion while rethinking the concept of finitude that occupies the center of philosophical anthropology(3). Then I examine the meaning of it in terms of knowing and acting(4). Next, by examining the fragility shaped by human disproportion, especially the emotional fragility, it reveals significance of ‘fallible man’ and ‘capable’(5).
