레비나스는 타자를 자신의 철학적 사유의 중심에 둔다. 그의 철학에서 타자는 도달할 수 없는 초월성이자, 규정이 불가능한 무한성이며, 자아에로의 통합을 거부하는 절대적인 다름이다. 레비나스는 절대적 다름을 ‘여성’, ‘여성적인 것’으로 은유화한다. 레비나스 철학에서 남성 중심적 동일성 철학을 극복할 수 있는 가능성의 단초를 발견하고자 하는 여성철학자들에게 레비나스의 이 은유는 불편한 걸림돌이 되어 왔다. 본 논문은 레비나스의 여성 은유가 그의 철학적 체계 안에서 어떠한 위치를 차지하고 있으며, 어떠한 의미를 지니고 있는지 비판적으로 분석한다. 비판적 분석을 통해 레비나스의 여성 은유가 그의 타자 윤리학의 함정이 될 수 있음을 밝힌다. 레비나스에게 여성은 거주 공간의 친밀한 타인이거나, 에로스적 욕망의 대상으로 은유화되면서, 윤리적 관계의 주체도 심각한 타자도 되지 못한다. 레비나스의 절대적 타자성에 근거한 윤리학은 여성 은유에 의해 내적으로 균열한다. 레비나스가 모호하게 남겨둔 ‘여성’은, 주체이자 타자이다. 주체이자 타자인 ‘여성’의 경험으로부터 내재적 전체성의 체계는 해체되기 시작한다.
Abstract
"The other" is a central concept of Levinas' philosophy: The other is transcendent, undetermined infinity and absolute difference that cannot be integrated into "the self". And Levinas often uses "the feminine" and "the femininity" as metaphors in elaborating this absolute difference. For women philosophers, this has been somewhat uncomfortable to swallow. I want to show what importance this metaphor of "the feminine" bears in his philosophy and critically analyse its significance. Doing so, I also intend to discuss that it could work as a trap in his ethical theories. “The feminine" fails to be the subject of ethical relation, nor serious other, while being reduced to be intimate other or the object of erotic desire. Levinas' ethics based on "the other" crumbles inward with the uses of "the feminine" metaphor. "The feminine" that Levinas left there so ambiguously shows that the woman is the subject and at the same time the other. From this position begins the feminie de-constructing the immanent totality of western traditional ontology.
