Abstract
This paper examines the ethical conditions of language and existence in an era increasingly shaped by generative artificial intelligence(AI). As AI systems process language through probabilistic combinations of signifiers, they prioritize efficiency, coherence, and immediate response—leaving little room for delay, silence, or interpretive suspension. In contrast, human language, especially in its literary and ethical dimensions, operates through différance: a structure of delay, hesitation, and failure to fully signify. Drawing on Derrida’s concept of différance and Levinas’s ethics of the Other, this study explores how the temporality of language—its non-coincidence with meaning—makes ethical relation possible. Through repeated experiments with meaningless signifiers, the paper highlights how AI persistently attempts to impose coherence where none exists, refusing to dwell in unintelligibility. By comparing this with human responses to linguistic failure, it becomes clear that the space of not-understanding is not a lack but a condition for hospitality. Language becomes ethical not by capturing or defining the Other, but by withholding closure—by becoming a space where the Other may arrive. Ultimately, this paper argues that we must move toward a linguisticethics rooted not in definition and precision, but in delay, openness, and the readiness to remain with what cannot be fully grasped. In doing so, it opens the possibility of a new linguistic sensibility for the ethics of existence in the age of AI.
