Abstract
This paper explores the possibility of the ethics of otherness through a dialogue between Confucius and Levinas. First, it compares the ethical characteristics of Levinas and Confucius from the perspective of the dialectic of selfhood and otherness and its narrative characteristics. The two philosophers develop ethical thinking based on otherness and human relations. These characteristics are revealed in Levinas’s phenomenological analysis of the face of the other and Confucius’s analysis of benevolence in human relations. Second, this study examines how communication is possible from the perspectives of Levinas’s responsibility and Confucius’s virtue of benevolence. It explores the specific foundation of ethics of otherness based on Levinas and Confucius’s dialogue on moral humanity, self-narrative, community narrative, and ethical implications of virtue. Therefore, the ethics of otherness initiates with more than just reciprocity. However, it is based on the ethical subjectivity of Confucius and Levinas. Thus, this study exemplifies the dialogue between the two thinkers and explores the possibility of the ethics of the other.
