Abstract
This paper discussed the need for disciplinary literacy education based on previous studies. And then, this paper dealt with several issues related to applying the disciplinary literacy approach to educational contexts. The need for disciplinary literacy education was discussed in four dimensions: disciplines, teachers, curriculum, and students. This was discussed specifically in the aspects of the differences of characteristics among disciplines, teachers’ recognition, the aims and contents of curriculum, and students’ in-depth access to disciplines. The issues of the application of disciplinary literacy instruction were dealt with in two dimensions: theoretical perspective and practical application. In terms of the theoretical perspective, it is necessary to study definition of discipline, and scopes of the concepts of text and literacy. Regarding the practical application, it is necessary to study literacy layers and instruction, task types and formats, time and type of collaboration, roles of elementary school teachers and Korean language education teachers, teacher education curriculum and Korean language education educators, and identity of the subject for Korean language education.
