Abstract
This study explored the collaborative reading ability needed by college students when performing collaborative reading inquiry tasks using the Internet. First, this study systematized the collaborative problem-solving abilities and their sub-functions into four categories: sharing, negotiating, executing, and monitoring through the synthesis of previous studies. Next, the frame of the collaborative problem-solving ability was applied to the actual Internet inquiry tasks of Korean university students and sub-functions of the collaborative reading ability were captured based on the evidence from actual data. The results of this study are as follows. First, among the four functions, negotiating and monitoring appear to be relatively more important in performing collaborative tasks. The negotiating function levels range from low to high, depending on levels of negotiation, and levels of negotiation function mainly used can reflect the quality of task performance. Finally, in a collaborative research task, metacognitive functions such as monitoring may be utilized more than in individual performance and may play an important role in task performance.
