Abstract
This study investigates nearly fifty articles published by Korean independence activist Lee Doo-san in The Orient Comrade , centering on his creative engagement with classical Chinese cultural resources as a strategic tool for anti-Japanese mobilization. Drawing on the classical Chinese rhetorical system of allusion techniques, this research systematically analyzes how Lee transformed traditional elements into powerful instruments of wartime discourse. The findings reveal that Lee’s classical allusions constituted a highly conscious cultural strategy. Through diverse techniques such as direct use, inverted use, adapted use, and juxtaposed use, he constructed three major functional discursive frameworks. First, classical poetry and allusions served as spiritual bugles—by invoking texts like Yue Fei’s Manjianghong, Lee Doo-san reimagined loyalist ideals as transnational symbols of resistance. Second, classical imagery functioned as a mirror of reality—allegories such as “The Snipe and the Clam” and agrarian images like “rising with the sun” were recontextualized to offer critical perspectives on wartime crises. Third, Confucian ethics served as moral grindstones—concepts such as self-cultivation and benevolence were modernized to shape the moral character of revolutionaries and provide a normative foundation for anti-imperialist rhetoric. Lee Doo-san’s practice demonstrates that traditional culture, when creatively reinterpreted, can generate powerful mobilizing energy and interpretive depth in modern national liberation movements. His transregional and cross-cultural allusion strategies not only offer a representative case for understanding the cultural politics of East Asian resistance during the war, but also provide valuable historical insight for rethinking civilizational dialogue and resistance discourse in the context of globalization.
