Abstract

This study investigates how the Daoist and Chan views of language from the Wei–Jin to the Tang–Song dynasties were transformed into distinct aesthetic forms within Chinese poetry, focusing on the key poetic terms wangyan (忘言, “forgetting words”) and wuyan (無言, “wordlessness”). The term wangyan, derived from the Zhuangzi’s phrase “deyiwangyan” (得意忘言, “having grasped the meaning, one forgets the words”), reflects a Daoist awareness of linguistic limitation and the pursuit of meaning beyond verbal expression. In contrast, wuyan became central in Tang–Song Chan poetry, where silence was transformed from absence into the very expression of enlightenment. Together, these two terms represent a continuous evolution of poetic thought—from the negation of language to its transcendence. Lin Xiyi’s Liezi Yanzhai Kouyi (列子鬳齋口義) articulates this process through a threefold transformation (三轉, sanzhuan): (1) wangyan, or “initial wordlessness,” where meaning is attained but traces of language remain; (2) wuyan, an intermediate phase marked by lingering distinctions between speech and silence; and (3) zhen wuyan (眞無言, “true wordlessness”), the complete transcendence of both language and knowledge. Through readings of Tao Yuanming, Bai Juyi, Su Shi, and Hongzhi Zhengjue, this study demonstrates how poetic language gradually shifts from verbal mediation to the manifestation of silence itself. This progression establishes the internal logic of classical Chinese poetics—“buyan → wangyan → wuyan → wuyanzhijing”—and reveals a paradoxical aesthetic in which the essence of language is rediscovered through its very negation.
