Abstract
1 Samuel 31:1-13 and 1 Chronicles 10:1-12 provide parallel accounts of Saul’s defeat and death. Despite their shared narrative framework, these texts exhibit notable variant readings, particularly in 1 Samuel 31:10-13 and 1 Chronicles 10:10-12. This study argues that such differences arise from divergent perspectives on Saul, with the variant in Samuel reflecting an additional anti-Saul redaction. Differences in the location of Saul’s corpse, the manner of its disposal, and the depiction of the people of Jabesh-Gilead reveal distinct theological orientations. The analysis concludes that 1 Chronicles 10:10-12 represents a tradition closer to the original, whereas 1 Samuel 31:10-13 is shaped by editorial tendencies hostile to Saul.
