Abstract

Christian eschatology that used to play a secondary role in theology, seems to have failed to reclaim its meaning corresponding to the insight of a contemporary Christian eschatologist who declared “Christianity is entirely eschatological.” In reality, the discussion of eschatology is tabooed, and secularization rather has instrumentalized it, leaving it still on the fringes of Christianity. Eschatology is misused to make futile predictions, and meaningless wishes for the future. Thus, it has become uncomfortable to talk about the end of the world in the Church; Christian eschatology has become increasingly unappealing and irrelevant to people. In fact, end-of-the-world talk is “fear-mongering” and “something suspicious of cults.” It has become a tool of those who seek to profit from the future by destabilizing it. The Church’s traditional emphasis on the doctrine of the Four Last Things (death, judgment, heaven, and hell) compounded the curiosity and fear of the afterlife. At the same time, the consequences took many forms from the escape from fears to the comfort in reality. As a result, even within the Church’s theology, pastoral care, catechism, and preaching, eschatological themes are not readily discussed. This is the task of Christian eschatology of today. There is a need to restore an eschatological perspective of the Church and human life. This paper explores the challenges of contemporary Christian eschatology in its search for relevance for the modern people. In doing so, it hopes to make Christ’s eschatology a signpost of hope for salvation for the hopeless, the discouraged, and the complacent. Eschatology can be the seed of the Church’s missionary nature in accordance with Christ’s proclamation of universal salvation to the Church, the universal sacrament of salvation. The people of God are on a journey through time and space till the end, walking together in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ to the ends of the Earth.
