Abstract
This study aims to reveal the political nature of mourning by comparing the acts of mourning by David and Rizpah using narrative and intertextual methods on core passages in the book of 2 Samuel: 2 Samuel 1 (Mourning for Saul/Jonathan), 3 (Mourning for Abner), and 21 (Rizpah's Vigil and Burial of Saul's Family). Chapter 2 dealt with David's mourning. David's mourning is characterized by a formal, public pattern that includes fact verification, lamentation, punishment/curse of the perpetrator, elegy, and burial. The mourning for Saul and Jonathan (2 Sam 1) is strongly characterized as a political act where David, through the punishment of the killer and the elegy, proclaimed himself the legitimate successor to Saul and secured the legitimacy of his royal succession. Furthermore, the mourning for Abner (2 Sam 3) prominently displays a political objective of proclaiming his innocence and consolidating his power. Chapter 3 dealt with Rizpah's mourning (2 Sam 21). Rizpah's mourning is shown as the act of guarding the unburied bodies of her descendants, who were executed as criminals and left exposed in the field, for six months. Although her act was a silent mourning without form, it was a political protest against the king's unjust treatment, demanding the restoration of human dignity through burial. Her persistent resistance ultimately garnered communal sympathy, leading King David to restore the honor of Saul's house and arrange for the bodies to be properly buried. Chapter 4 compared David's and Rizpah's mourning by dividing the comparison into the status of the mourner and the mourned, the difference in the method of mourning, and the objective of mourning. Through this, it was shown that David focused on communal mourning to reinforce his political legitimacy and strengthen his kingship. In contrast, Rizpah displayed the political characteristic of the weak, fighting for resistance and the restoration of honor. Chapter 5 explained the theological significance of the mourning in 2 Samuel 1 and the burial in 2 Samuel 21, stating that the burial in Chapter 21 signifies the completion of the mourning ritual, demonstrates David as the king of the united kingdom, and symbolizes the reconciliation between Saul and David. The results of this study show that mourning inevitably possesses a political nature that does not stay at the level of personal grief but seeks to redress the injustice of the deceased and establish social justice. While David's mourning demonstrated how it could be used for the reinforcement of power, Rizpah's mourning showed that the resistance of the weak could bring about social solidarity and justice.
