Abstract
In The Law of Peoples, John Rawls suggests the concept of a “decent society” and argues that liberal societies ought to tolerate such societies. As a concrete example, he presents a hypothetical Islamic Society called Kazanistan. Both the concept of a decent society and the example of Kazanistan have provoked a series of controversies. This paper aims to examine the various criticisms emerged and to offer several responses to them. The first set of criticisms addressed in this paper concerns the decent society itself; the second targets Rawls’s portrayal of Kazanistan as a representative decent hierarchical society. Through the responses to these criticisms, this paper argues that Rawls’s Society of Peoples can be understood as a justifiable model of pluralism in international relations.
