본 논문은 롤스의 정의론을 그의 삼부작 『정의론』, 『정치적 자유주의』, 『만민법』을 중심으로 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 검토를 통해 우리는 롤스가 국내적 차원의 정의론에서 출발하여, 다문화의 현실을 만나 정치적 자유주의를 표방한 후, 마침내 세계 평화라는 희망을 추구하는 국제적 차원의 정의론에 이르게 된 사상적 여정을 추적한다. 롤스의 정의론이 노정하는 비일관성에 대한 지속적인 비판에도 불구하고, 롤스의 저작들에서 일관적으로 강조되는 한 가지 주제는 바로 ‘질서 정연한 사회의 가능성’이다. 질서 정연한 국내적 사회들이 함께 이루는 질서 정연한 국제 사회의 비전은 롤스가 말한 ‘현실주의적 유토피아’의 중층 구조라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This article explores Rawls’s theory of justice, focusing on his trilogy, A Theory of Justice, Political Liberalism, and The Law of Peoples. Through this exploration, we trace Rawls’s philosophical journey, starting from the domestic theory of justice, advocating political liberalism faced with the fact of pluralism, and finally arriving at the international theory of justice pursuing the hope of world peace. Despite continued criticism of the inconsistency in Rawls’s theory of justice, one theme which has been consistently emphasized in Rawls’s works is ‘the possibility of the well-ordered society’. After all, the vision of an well-ordered international society formed by well-ordered domestic societies can be said to be a multi-layered structure of what Rawls called a ‘realistic Utopia’.
