Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of developing a program to promote empathy in children through integrated art activities and applying it on children’s communication skills and prosocial behavior. The program was developed through literature and needs analyses, program draft development, and validation processes. The final program consisted of goals and objectives, educational content, teaching-learning methods, and evaluation. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, 18 5-year-old children from a public G daycare center in Gyeonggi Province were selected as the experimental group, and 18 5-year-old children from a public B daycare center in the same region were selected as the comparison group. The experimental group applied the program a total of 26 times over 13 weeks, and the comparison group implemented a child-centered and play-centered curriculum based on the 2019 revised Nuri Curriculum. The independent sample t-test was used to analyze the effects. As a result, the program to promote empathy in children through integrated art activities was found to have a positive effect on improving children’s communication skills and prosocial behavior. These results suggest that teaching and learning methods utilizing integrated art activities can be applied to early childhood education settings, and that they can effectively contribute to improving children’s empathy.
