Abstract

This study examines international exchange programs managed by university students and identifies the forms of learning that emerged through the management process. The Social Networking Approach (SNA) was adopted as the analytical framework. Drawing on students’ reflections on their organizational activities, the study explores how learning was shaped through the practice of operating student-led exchange programs. Between 2020 and 2024, seven Korean student organizers were interviewed following the completion of each year’s program. Their narratives were transcribed and analyzed through the lens of SNA. The analysis revealed that a wide range of learning outcomes developed during the management process and that the abilities articulated in SNA’s “three domains × three abilities + three linkages” were fostered. In the language domain, students actively engaged in dialogue while compensating for linguistic limitations, demonstrating a collaborative stance toward mutual understanding. In the cultural domain, they developed the capacity to view their own culture with greater objectivity through intercultural comparison and were observed navigating and overcoming friction and conflict. In the global domain, collaboration with peers of different cultural backgrounds strengthened their awareness as members of a global society, as evidenced by proactive engagement, leadership, and the use of ICT tools for information sharing. Moreover, the process of proactively accessing diverse individuals, resources, and information—and extending those interactions into a continuing network—embodied the principles of the “three linkages.” These findings suggest that the management of student-led exchange programs offers substantial educational value as a setting for cultivating the holistic communication competence envisioned by SNA.
