Abstract
This study empirically investigates the process of semantic reconfiguration of the Russian motion verb zajti through a contrastive analysis of native-speaker corpus data and learner interlanguage data derived from previous research. The analysis reveals that advanced learners tend to select verbs in accordance with a normative spatial rule equating boundary crossing with vojti, exhibiting selection patterns that differ from those of native speakers even in identical scenes. By contrast, native speakers show a strong tendency to choose zajti based not on the physical properties of locations but on actional purpose and discourse function. Corpus-based analysis further demonstrates that zajti has undergone semantic reorganization beyond a purely spatial meaning of ‘entry’, developing a functional schema associated with ‘visits for interaction’. Moreover, rather than replacing the semantic domain of prijti, which encodes arrival and subsequent stay, zajti is shown to be differentiated as an alternative pragmatic mechanism that allows speakers to reconceptualize events as functional visits within an action-frame perspective. These findings suggest that the system of Russian motion verbs is undergoing a conceptual shift from a space-centered to a function-centered frame. On this basis, the study argues for the necessity of a pedagogical approach that reflects actual usage frequency and discourse functions, enabling learners to better understand the diversity of meaning construction.
