Abstract

This study analyzes grammar mock lessons conducted by pre-service Korean language teachers and proposes strategies to strengthen their instructional competence. To ensure a comprehensive analysis, four criteria were established: lesson stage composition, classroom management and teacher attitude, teacher talk and interaction, and use of instructional materials and equipment. Video recordings of lessons from 31 pre-service Korean language teachers were analyzed. The results indicate several challenges: (1) grammar instruction emphasized form over meaning; (2) practice and activity stages were not clearly distinguished, with limited teacher guidance; (3) teacher talk often exceeded learners’ proficiency levels and included unnecessary or inappropriate questions; (4) interaction with learners was insufficient, and classroom demeanor lacked naturalness; and (5) visual and multimedia resources were not effectively utilized. These findings suggest that such issues should be explicitly addressed in Korean language teaching practicum courses. Pre-service teachers should be guided to plan vocabulary, grammar materials, teaching aids, and nonverbal communication in advance, taking into account learners’ proficiency and age. In addition, teacher talk should be carefully prepared, with practice in voice, speech rate, and intonation, and with strategic use of grammatically appropriate utterances and questions.
