Abstract
This paper is a preliminary study on establishing a candidate list for selecting headwords in Korean language education dictionaries. To achieve this, a balanced corpus and a Korean language textbook corpus were constructed to extract a list of high-frequency ‘N+N’ (noun+noun) combinations. These were then compared with the headword lists of existing dictionaries to review the current listings. The findings of this study are as follows. First, high-frequency ‘N+N’ combinations were extracted based on their ranking in both the balanced general corpus and the Korean language textbook corpus, prioritizing those with a high degree of overlap across sub-corpora. Based on this preliminary list, future research can distinguish between simple adjacent structures and compound constructions while assessing their usefulness in Korean language education. Second, a list of ‘N+N’ combinations from existing dictionaries was compiled, and the degree of overlap among these lists was examined. Additionally, the number of entries and their frequency rankings were compared between these lists and actual corpus data (balanced corpus and Korean language textbook corpus). The results revealed a significant discrepancy between actual corpus data, textbooks, and existing dictionary lists. This study was initiated based on the need to establish selection criteria for ‘N+N’ combinations in current Korean language education dictionaries. By reviewing the existing lists and conducting a comparative analysis using corpus data, this research aims to provide a foundation for finalizing a meaningful list of ‘N+N’ combinations for Korean language education in the future.
