이 논의에서는 선교사 알렌의 『A Language Book of Korean』의 문장 부문에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. 문법 항목이 별도로 제시되어 있지 않은 『A Language Book of Korean』 문장 부문에는 목표 언어를 학습할 수 있는 어휘와 문법 항목과 문법 표현이 잘 반영되어 있다고 할 것이다. 따라서 이 학습서의 문장(예문)을 분석하면, 당시 학습자들에게 꼭 교수되거나 제공되어야 하는 문법 항목을 확인할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 측면에서 『A Language Book of Korean』은 초기 선교사 즉 영어권 한국어 학습자들이 빠른 시간 내에 한국어를 익힐 수 있도록, 당시 한국(조선)에서 많이 사용되던 문법 항목과 표현을 담았을 가능성이 크다고 할 것이다. 문법 항목의 수록 기준이나 과정은 기록으로 남지 않아 확인이 어렵지만, 이 자료를 통하여 간접적으로나마 외국어로서의 한국어 문법 교육과 한국어 교재 및 학습서 편찬의 초기 모습을 찾아보는 데 도움을 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 그 결과는 한국어 교재사의 초기 모습과 당시 한국어 문법의 양상을 밝히는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
In this discussion, the sentence section of Missionary Allen’s A Language Book of Korean was analyzed. It can be said that vocabulary, grammar items, and grammar expressions that can learn the target language are well reflected in the A Language Book of Korean sentence section, which does not have a separate grammar item. Therefore, by analyzing the sentences (example sentences) in this study book, you will be able to identify grammar items that must be taught or provided to learners at the time. In this respect, it is highly likely that the A Language Book of Korean contained grammar items and expressions that were widely used in Korea (Joseon) at the time so that early missionaries, that is, English-speaking Korean learners, could learn Korean in a short time. It is difficult to confirm because the criteria or processes for inclusion of grammar items are not recorded, but through this data, it will be helpful to indirectly find out the initial appearance of Korean grammar education as a foreign language and the compilation of Korean textbooks and study books. The results are expected to contribute to clarifying the initial appearance of Korean language textbooks and aspects of Korean grammar at the time.
