Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of locus of control, leadership experience, generalized self-efficacy and supportive leadership on leadership self-efficacy, and to examine the effect of leadership self-efficacy on leadership attempt. In addition, we attempt to verify the mediating effect of leadership self-efficacy on the relationships between locus of control, leadership experience, generalized self-efficacy and supportive leadership and leadership attempt. To test the proposed hypotheses in our study, we collected data via a survey with a sample of 213 employees in 11 firms. The major findings are as follows: First, locus of control, leadership experience, generalized self-efficacy and supportive leadership were positively associated with leadership self-efficacy. Second, leadership self-efficacy was positively associated with leadership attempt. Finally, leadership self-efficacy has turned out to have mediation effects on the relationship between locus of control, generalized self-efficacy and supportive leadership and leadership attempt, and to have partial mediation effect on the relationship between leadership experience and leadership attempt. This result indicated that locus of control, generalized self-efficacy, leadership experience and supportive leadership directly and indirectly effects on leadership attempt through leadership self-efficacy. Based on these findings, implications of the research findings are discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided.
