Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to identify perceived parental support types among middle school students using latent profile analysis based on four dimensions of support (emotional, informational, evaluative, and instrumental) and examine differences in academic, psychological, and social adjustment across these types. Methodology: Data from waves 5-6 of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey were analyzed. The sample consisted of 2,061 middle school students (1,035 males, 50.2%; 1,026 females, 49.8%). Latent profile analysis was employed to classify perceived parental support types, and the BCH method was used to examine group differences in adjustment outcomes. Findings: Three distinct perceived parental support profiles emerged: Instrumental Support-Focused (54.1%), Instrumental Support-Deficient (14.4%), and Balanced Support (31.5%). The Balanced Support group demonstrated superior outcomes across all adjustment domains. The Instrumental Support-Focused and Instrumental Support-Deficient groups showed no significant differences in psychological adjustment (life satisfaction, self-esteem) and social adjustment (peer relationships), while the Instrumental Support-Focused group exhibited higher depression levels. These findings suggest that instrumental support shows effects mainly in academic adjustment, with limited impact on psychological and social adjustment. Value: This study provides empirical evidence that balanced perceived parental support integrating emotional, informational, and evaluative dimensions is essential for healthy adolescent development. This study also challenges the prevalent belief in Korea that increased instrumental support through private education spending necessarily leads to better overall adjustment outcomes.
