Abstract
This paper compares and analyzes the trade patterns of Korea and Japan using the gravity model. The analysis reveals that for both countries, trade increases with larger economic size, closer geographical distance, and greater differences in factor endowments, with economic size showing the most significant influence. These trends remain consistent even when using export and import volumes as dependent variables, although the statistical significance slightly diminishes for Korea. In contrast, Japan exhibits increased trade when the differences in factor endowments are smaller, suggesting a developed-country trade structure characterized by intra-industry trade involving similar types of goods. Furthermore, Korea appears more sensitive to economic uncertainty, implying a greater need to ensure structural stability in its economy. In addition, foreign direct investment (FDI) positively influences trade expansion in Korea, supporting previous findings that FDI contributes to productivity growth and participation in global value chains. Overall, the trade of both countries is shaped by a combination of factors, including economic size, distance, factor endowments, FDI, exchange rates, and economic uncertainty. These findings highlight the importance of formulating long-term and balanced trade strategies that consider economic structures and policy environments.
