Abstract

This study aims to provide effective marketing alternatives for domestic importers seeking to import Irish products by analyzing Ireland’s national image. Ireland, after overcoming a long history of hardship, has demonstrated remarkable economic growth in the global market as a member of the European Union (EU) since the 1990s and has been strengthening its political and economic cooperation with South Korea. Recently, the demand for Irish products has been increasing due to the rapid expansion of the domestic whiskey market, and in 2024, the resumption of beef imports, which had been suspended due to concerns over mad cow disease, has further heightened Korean consumers' interest in Irish products. Given these timely developments, this study seeks to provide practical insights into the significance of national image in international trade. While prior research has focused primarily on identifying the components of national image and their impact on product perception, most studies have applied general product categories rather than actual imported goods available to consumers. Furthermore, previous studies have lacked detailed analyses of the influence of each factor constituting national image. Therefore, this study aims to contribute more practically to national image research, which remains a crucial factor in international trade. Based on this objective, the study first examines Ireland's overall political, cultural, and economic landscape, along with its globally recognized "Green Image." It then investigates how Korean consumers' perceptions of Ireland’s national image influence their attitudes toward imported Irish products, applying differentiated analyses to key Irish imports currently available in the Korean market. The study collected 211 responses from February 10 to February 15, 2025, and statistically analyzed the data using the SPSS WIN. 25.0 statistical package. The results indicate that Ireland's "Green Image" (M=3.84) was perceived most strongly, followed by "Economic Image" (M=3.49) and "Historical Image" (M=3.39). Female respondents exhibited a relatively higher perception of the Green Image compared to males. Additionally, younger respondents in their 20s and older respondents in their 50s had a stronger recognition of the Green and Economic Images than those in their 30s and 40s (p<.05). Regarding purchase intention, "Food (Seafood/Meat) Purchase Intention" (M=3.85) ranked highest, followed by "Cosmetics/Clothing Purchase Intention" (M=3.38). Female respondents showed a relatively higher intention to purchase cosmetics and clothing than males. Additionally, respondents in their 20s exhibited a higher overall intention to purchase Irish products and, specifically, cosmetics and clothing compared to those in their 30s–50s (p<.001). Correlation analysis of key variables revealed significant positive correlations between the Green Image (r=.550, p<.001), Economic Image (r=.308, p<.001), and Historical Image (r=.199, p<.01) with purchase intention for all product categories. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the impact of Ireland’s national image on Korean consumers' purchase intentions for Irish products. The results show that the Green Image (β=.653, p<.001) had a statistically significant positive impact on the overall purchase intention of Irish products. Specifically, the Green Image (β=.526, p<.001) and Economic Image (β=.142, p<.05) significantly influenced the purchase intention of cosmetics and clothing, while the Green Image (β=.501, p<.001) and Historical Image (β=.166, p<.05) significantly influenced the purchase intention of food products.
