Abstract

This article examines Ryu Ju-hyun’s A Silent Apocalypse (1977) to analyze how psychological realism in 1970s Korean literature internalizes desire and morality within narrative form. In his later works, Ryu shifts from historical and social realism toward an exploration of the inner structures of desire, guilt, and moral pressure. Through the everyday life of a newly married couple, A Silent Apocalypse portrays the interaction of sexual desire, anxiety, and moral self-surveillance, revealing how modern ethical systems collapse within the individual psyche. By situating the novel within the socio-cultural context of rapid industrialization and modernization, this study clarifies the ethical implications of Ryu’s “inner realism.” It argues that the novel articulates the conditions of an incomplete morality in which desire and guilt coexist, offering a literary inquiry into the human subject after the erosion of stable moral certainties.
