Abstract

This article aims to elucidate the meaning of ‘time(temporality)’ as revealed in Kim Hoon’s novel Harbin. To this end, I focus on the text’s temporal structure and examine how it connects to historical and social significance. This article examines the meaning of time as it appears in the novel, focusing specifically on the conflicting temporalities. While assuming the continuity of the overall narrative, I focus on the discontinuous temporalities revealed in the first half, second half, and conclusion. The ‘time of the pursuer and the pursued’ in the first half, the ‘time of the colonizer and the time of the colonized’ in the second half, and the ‘earthly time and celestial time’ in the conclusion are prominent temporal conflicts in each section. In ‘time of the pursuer and the pursued,’ the narratives of Ito Hirobumi and Ahn Jung-geun intersect, revealing that the temporal structure of the first half of the novel is designed so that Ahn Jung-geun’s time ‘chases’ Ito Hirobumi’s time. The subsequent ‘time of the colonizer and time of the colonized’ section, focusing on Ahn Jung-geun’s interrogation and trial, examines how the time pursued by the colonial power and the time desired by the colonized confront the issue of ‘temporality’. Finally, in ‘earthly time and celestial time’, this section examines how celestial time, transcending earthly time, intervenes in ‘reality’ at the novel’s conclusion to mourn Ahn Jung-geun, both a fictional character and a historical figure. While focusing on the contrasting temporal patterns revealed in the novel’s first half, second half, and conclusion, a common point raised was the issue of the ‘personalization of history’ focused on the ‘individual’. The first half centers on Ito and An Jung-geun, while the latter half focuses on An Jung-geun as an individual. This reveals the novel’s inability to fully capture the diverse voices of its characters and the differing memories of its contemporaries. This article is significant in that it offers a profound reading of the novel Harbin by linking an analysis of the text’s temporal structure to its historical and social implications. Furthermore, it illuminates the possibilities and limitations of historical fiction, arising from the portrayal of a historical figure through a single ‘individual’.
