Abstract

Yoo Ju-hyun began his literary career by publishing the short story Street of Agitation in the October 1948 issue of Baekmin (No. 16). He was one of the most prolific writers of the 1950s, creating outstanding short stories that delicately depicted the actions of characters constrained by the absurd realities and societal pressures of the post-war period. Despite his creativity, he was primarily recognized merely as one of the post-war generation writers and did not receive the attention his work deserved. With the emergence of a new generation of writers, Yoo Ju-hyun transitioned to writing long novels, which he termed "historical epic novels." His notable works include The Government-General of Joseon, which was the first Korean literary work to be translated and published overseas, along with Daewongun, The Korean Empire, The Princess, and Dance of Breaking the Heavens. These works received wide reader acclaim and became bestsellers, largely due to their serialization in newspapers focusing on popular appeal. However, it would be reductive to evaluate Yoo Ju-hyun's work solely on its popularity. His evolution as a writer can be seen as an internal adaptation stemming from the need for historical change and the subsequent disillusionment following the ‘April 19 Revolution’. Lovers Across the River reflects Yoo Ju-hyun's awareness of the necessity for change inspired by the ‘April 19 Revolution’, marking a significant turning point in his literary world. It not only showcases a shift from his earlier literary themes but also foreshadows the transformation in his later historical novels following the thwarting of societal hopes by a coup. This paper focuses on Lovers Across the River with an awareness of such issues. It aims to explore how the author perceives the 'revolution' on a social level through the personal ethics of restoring love and rebuilding communities. Through this, the study seeks to identify the characteristics of Yoo Ju-hyun's literature, which focuses on the inner problems of individuals caught in historical events, while also understanding the specific aspects of contemporary novelistic responses to the April 19 Revolution.
