Abstract

Amos Oz was born on May 4, 1939, in a village outside Jerusalem, then part of the British Mandate of Palestine. Born to Jewish parents who had immigrated from Eastern Europe, he was part of the first generation to learn Hebrew as a first language. Oz's novels largely revolve around love and family relationships between men and women. However, Israeli history is deeply ingrained within them. This history is not merely an abstract fact contained in textbooks, but a reality that impacts ordinary people. Regardless of political or economic circumstances, Israeli immigrants came to Palestine for a variety of reasons. Not all were enthusiastic about Zionism. Some may have struggled to adapt to a foreign land, and others undoubtedly held different political views from the mainstream. History, like the "roots of existence," deeply ingrains itself in the lives of these diverse individuals and exerts a lasting influence. Oz has been a writer who has tirelessly explored this root of existence throughout his career. His works are primarily set in the Israeli countryside and kibbutzim. His depictions of the outskirts of Jerusalem, where he spent his childhood, offer readers a unique experience, as if traveling through an unfamiliar land. His novels feel like a play, quietly unfolding the world's noisy events under the dim lights of a living room stage. The play is quiet and contemplative, effectively revealing the urgency of the characters' lives. The pathos of human relationships also plays a crucial role in creating this atmosphere. Through the inner exploration of characters revealed in dysfunctional relationships, the author reveals the inevitable contradictions of life and the weight of fate.
