Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics of citizenship education for students with disabilities in the social studies of the special support school curriculum in Japan, and based on it, suggest the implications for improvement of the social studies in the special education basic curriculum. To this end, I reviewed the social studies curriculum for intellectual disabilities as amended in 2017 in terms of citizenship education. In the special support school curriculum, the social studies was organized only in the middle and high schools. Citizenship oriented through social studies is defined as citizens as social constructors with the basis of civil qualities and abilities, and sub-elements of the citizenship are knowledge and skills, thinking, judgment, expressive power, learning power and personality. The content of the social studies was present as standard of achievement based on the content of social recognition, and its reflects the sub-components of the civil quality. As such, the social studies of the special support school curriculum aims to foster the same qualities as the social studies of the common curriculum, and suggests implications in that it clarifies the character of the social studies as a social recognition subject.
